The process of remembering a traumatic past is never finished – it changes and evolves with generations. While survivors and those missing their loved ones know the trauma all too well, others need to be reminded and learn. We argue that the complexity of the task to meaningfully remember the tragedies of the Korean War can only be approached through empathetic understanding of the local socio-cultural context, wishes of the bereaved and the community. This is why the design envisions an unfinished space of remembrance that evolves together with the people who will appropriate it in the future. The memorial park is a respectful framework for human interactions through dialogue, landscape and architecture.
