A sculptural monument for Vladimir Peric Valter, a Partizan commander during the Second World War in German-occupied Sarajevo, was planned to be coupled with a commemorative structure for the 2nd May – a day that was crucial for the defense of Sarajevo from the Jugoslav army in 1992. Hence the two monuments relate thematically. Our proposal seeks to create a spatial relationship between the two structures as well as usable public space since the location will become a starting point of a pedestrian walkway. The existing ‘Valter’ monument is preserved as it is while the new memorial develops behind as an open book, materialized in a highly polished white stone. Pedestrian routes, determined in the analysis of use of public space, run throughout the location.
