A sculptural monument for Vladimir Peric Valter, a Partizan commander during the Second World War in German-occupied Sarajevo, was planned to be coupled with a commemorative structure for the 2nd May – a day that was crucial for the defense of Sarajevo in 1992. Our proposal seeks to create a spatial relationship between the existing monument and planned memorial. It also aims to offer a usable public space as a starting point of a pedestrian walkway. The existing ‘Valter’ monument is preserved as it is while the new memorial space becomes a spatial envelope, materialized in a highly polished white stone, green patches of sloping ground and pedestrian routes. Names of Sarajevo’s civilian and military victims are inscribed on the tilted wall behind the existing monument.
